This AS Level can only be taken with the BTEC Foundation in Art and Design. Students are introduced to working in a range of approaches to Graphic Communication including specialist disciplines such as Illustration, Typography, Multi Media Design and Design for Print. Students will be working to design briefs which will develop an understanding of image production and text in a range of creative formats relating to advertising, publishing and multi media production. The course is essential for students wishing to follow a career in Graphic Design.
COMPONENT 1 - PERSONAL INVESTIGATION
Element 1 - Practical Portfolio:
Students will need to develop a practical portfolio which demonstrates advanced 2D skills and techniques working to design briefs. The relationship between text and image will be explored through a wide range of 2D media where drawing will play an essential part of the design process. Creative design solutions will also be explored through digital media and different software applications in at least one of the following: image and typography; illustration; advertising; layout design; editorial design; experimental imagery; abstract approaches.
Element 2 - Related Study:
The aim of the related study is to enable students to develop their ability to communicate their knowledge and understanding of art historical movements, genres, practitioners and design. It also builds their understanding of the relationship between society and graphic communication: the design cycle.
COMPONENT 2 - EXTERNALLY SET TASK
Question paper which gives students the opportunity to produce visual solutions to design briefs and communicate ideas using creative typography, mixed media and digital approaches.
The course is delivered through challenging design briefs which will introduce students to different software
applications to develop skills in layout design, image production and creative exploration of ideas.
